The original Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit was built in 1961 and hosted multiple rounds of the F1 World Championship between 1967 and 1993, amidst various upgrades. The facility remained the destination of choice for local and international motorsport including various rounds of the World Superbike Championship and A1GP until 2010.
What proceeded, under the ownership of businessman and race driver Toby Venter, was an extensive, redevelopment plan for the facility which represents the single largest upgrade in the circuit's 54-year history.
The Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit will be filled with eager cyclists - and not racing cars - on Sunday. So to help prepare you for this unique experience, here are 3 things to expect on the Kyalami leg of Ride Joburg.
1. Water point 7 is just as you enter the circuit. You'll get an opportunity to refresh before you tackle the pristine, smooth tarmac.
2. The mineshaft climb seems like it could be a great feat, but getting over the top could be the exciting bit. If you are part of a bunch, use them to suck you along.
3. The scenic views from the top of the hill overlooking Joburg. It's gorgeous to view, take a glimpse, and be inspired to complete your ride.
Get prepared for a chance of a lifetime, and once you hit that tarmac, feel the wind on your face and take those swift turns with glee.
